What is VR?

Motion Sickness in VR

In VR, motion sickness can occur in the form of a disturbance of the sense of balance. The eyes perceive a movement in VR, which the sense of balance cannot confirm. This lack of confirmation is triggered by the player standing still in the physical world. In the same way, delayed movement in VR can cause nausea because the movement of the head does not correspond to the movement of the camera in VR.

How motion Sickness is created?

The confusion of the sense of balance can occur through games played in the first-person perspective. Many fast movements, a shaky camera movement, abrupt camera pans and a narrowed or unfamiliar viewing angle are frequent triggers for motion sickness. Symptoms

Motion sickness can cause various symptoms. These include dizziness, cold sweat, motion instability, general discomfort, nausea, vomiting, headache, fatigue and lethargy. These symptoms must be prevented, so a few possibilities are explained below. However, it is first necessary to explain which people are most susceptible to motion sickness.

Susceptible Persons

First of all, it must be noted that every person has individual reactions. Here, the age must be taken into account. While children between eight and twelve are the most susceptible, the symptoms become less noticeable with increasing age from 18 to 50. It is estimated that five per cent suffer from these symptoms their entire lives. Whereas the risk is low or non-existent in experienced gamers.

Preventive Help

A few strategies exist to prevent the symptoms of motion sickness. Firstly, it is important to use VR in a pleasant environment. Motion-Sickness-Studie

There is already a study that uses "redirected walking" to avoid motion sickness.
