From Far Cry to VR – how Crytek redefined game graphics

What is CryENGINE?

CryENGINE is one of the most powerful game engines in the world, developed by German studio Crytek and on the market since May 2002. What began as a technical demo for Nvidia grew into a fully-fledged engine that has significantly shaped game graphics for over two decades.

Supported platforms include Windows, Linux, iOS, Wii U, PlayStation 3 and 4, as well as Xbox 360 and One. The engine is based on C, C++ and Lua. Since mid-2011, it has been available for free under a "pay what you want" model, including full access to source code and tools. Since March 2018, 5% of revenue generated from published games must be paid to Crytek.

From Demo to Engine: Far Cry (2004)

The first game built on CryENGINE was Far Cry, released in 2004. It remains a graphical milestone to this day: realistic water rendering, enormous draw distances and depth of field set new standards. This was made possible through Bump Mapping, Pixel and Vertex Shaders, and High Dynamic Range Rendering, all of which were revolutionary at the time.

CryENGINE 2 and Crysis: The Hardest GPU Test of All Time (2007)

In November 2007, CryENGINE 2 arrived alongside Crysis, the game that brought an entire hardware generation to its knees. Detailed facial animations, realistic plant movement, volumetric clouds and DirectX 10 support made Crysis the technical benchmark of its era. The question "But can it run Crysis?" became a cultural meme in the gaming community.

CryENGINE 3: The Move to Consoles (2009)

Two years later, at GDC 2009, Crytek unveiled CryENGINE 3 and made its first move into the console market. DirectX 11 and AMD Mantle support continued to push graphical fidelity, while the engine also demonstrated that compelling, narrative-driven games were well within its reach.

CryENGINE 3.6 to 3.8: Quiet Evolution (2013)

The 2013 version of CryENGINE carries no official version number but was internally referred to as version 3.6.0. It marks a phase of technical maturity: from version 3.8.1 onwards, the engine added OpenGL support as an additional graphics API, significantly expanding its platform compatibility.

CryENGINE V: VR, DirectX 12 and the Future (2016)

On March 16, 2016, Crytek released CryENGINE V, the most current generation of the engine to date. Key additions include native Virtual Reality support, DirectX 12 compatibility, and the Vulkan API. This positions the engine firmly for the next generation of games and real-time experiences.
