Game development
The following article explains the concept of horror games and presents notable examples of well-known horror games.
A horror game encompasses interactive digital experiences designed to evoke fear and dread in players by incorporating elements commonly associated with horror, such as violence, bloodshed, and jump scares. The goal is to deliberately induce fear and terror through in-game interactions. Unlike passive horror media like films, players actively engage with the virtual world and attempt to achieve specific objectives, with survival often being a central goal. Players are typically pursued by malevolent entities or antagonistic characters and must navigate hostile environments while trying to escape or outsmart their pursuers. The immersive nature of these games contributes to the player's emotional involvement and enhances the sense of fear.
One of the earliest examples of a survival horror game is "Haunted House", released in 1982 for the Atari gaming platform. In this game, players must solve puzzles while trying to escape a menacing creature, highlighting the central gameplay elements of the genre.
Slender: The Eight Pages (2012) This game emerged from the internet phenomenon surrounding the "Slender Man" character, placing players in a dark forest where they must find eight scattered pages. The central antagonist, the faceless "Slender Man," relentlessly pursues the player, creating an atmosphere of constant dread and tension. The strategic use of lighting and nighttime settings contributes to the game's disturbing atmosphere. The popularity of Slender: The Eight Pages eventually led to a film adaptation.
Outlast series (2013, 2014, and 2017) The Outlast series, popular among horror fans, puts players in the role of an investigative journalist attempting to uncover secret activities in a deranged sanatorium. The game unfolds a nightmarish scenario in which the player encounters violent inmates, supernatural entities, and relentless threats to their life. The use of a camcorder with night vision as a central gameplay mechanic intensifies the dark, dangerous environments. Players must find keys, fuses, and batteries, with the latter being a crucial resource that increases the pressure in already tense situations.
Dead by Daylight (2016) Dead by Daylight stands out with its multiplayer focus, giving the horror genre a fresh twist. One player takes on the role of a ruthless killer, while others must activate scattered generators across the map to escape. Players can equip various items, such as toolboxes and medkits, while collected points can be used to progress through a skill tree. Iconic figures from horror history, including Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger, appear as terrifying killers.
The horror genre in games offers an exciting and action-packed experience for enthusiasts. While some people find horror games intimidating, they represent a unique and captivating form of entertainment. Players interested in diverse gaming experiences should try a horror game to experience the suspense and emotional intensity the genre has to offer.
