Short Description

We are delighted to share our project with Torro — a popular German streamer and content creator who has won the hearts of audiences with his wit, charm and infectious energy. In this exciting project, we collaborated with Torro to bring his unique personality and humour to life in the world of virtual YouTubing, or VTubing.

What is VTubing?

VTubing is a rapidly growing phenomenon that allows any content creator to embody a digital avatar and interact with their audience in real time. Using advanced motion capture technology and sophisticated graphics software, VTubers like Torro can create virtual personas that are just as expressive and captivating as their real-world counterparts.

Goals

Our primary goal on this project was to create a virtual avatar for Torro that truly captures his unique voice and presence. From the way he moves to his facial expressions, we employed advanced motion capture technology to create a digital representation of Torro that feels as real and authentic as possible.

But that wasn't all — we also explored new ways to engage Torro's audience and offer viewers a more immersive experience. From interactive games and challenges to live showcasing of the VTubing model, we used the latest technology to bring Torro closer to his fans and build a more dynamic and engaged online community.

Which Technologies Were Used?

Creating a VTubing avatar involves several technologies and software tools from different disciplines. For Torro's avatar, we used the following:

  1. Motion capture technology — used to record the performer's body movements and facial expressions.
  2. 3D modelling and animation software — used to create and animate the digital avatar. Well-known examples include 3ds Max, Maya and Blender. We used Blender.
  3. A game development engine — we opted for both Unity3D and Unreal Engine. The game engine is used to render the digital avatar in real time and create the virtual environment. We go into more detail about our engine choice in the section below.
  4. Live streaming software — used to broadcast the performance to viewers in real time.
  5. Virtual camera technology — used to control the camera within the virtual environment and create dynamic shots. In our case, this was a standard iPhone.
  6. Facial recognition technology — used to capture the performer's facial expressions and map them onto the digital avatar. Facial recognition was already built into the relevant iOS version.

Which Engine Was Used?

Both Unreal Engine and Unity can be used to create a VTubing avatar, and each has its own strengths and weaknesses.

Unreal Engine is known for its photorealistic graphics and advanced rendering capabilities. It also features a built-in physics engine and a robust animation system, making it ideal for creating complex and realistic movements. In addition, Unreal Engine has a large and active community, meaning developers have access to a wealth of resources to learn from.

Unity, on the other hand, is known for its ease of use and flexibility. It has a straightforward and intuitive interface that makes it accessible to developers of all experience levels. Unity is also highly adaptable, with a wide range of plugins and add-ons available to extend its functionality. Furthermore, Unity is cross-platform, meaning it can be used to create VTubing avatars for various platforms including desktop, mobile and VR.

Both engines are capable of producing high-quality VTubing avatars, and our choice ultimately depended on the intended use case. Since the live stream needed to reach viewers without any lag, we implemented the performance-optimised solution using Unity3D, while pre-rendered videos were produced using Unreal Engine.

How Did the Project Go?

Working with Torro on his VTubing model was an absolute pleasure! From the very start, Torro's relaxed and upbeat personality made the project a joy to work on. But don't let his laid-back attitude fool you — Torro pushed us to our limits with his high standards and creative vision for his virtual avatar.

Throughout the project, we worked closely with Torro to bring his vision to life. From brainstorming sessions to testing and refining the model, we worked hand in hand to ensure every detail was just right. Torro's feedback was invaluable, helping us to fine-tune the model and create a virtual persona that truly captures his unique personality and style.

And even though we pushed ourselves hard to achieve the best possible results, the project remained fun and exciting throughout. Torro's enthusiasm and energy were infectious, and we had a great time experimenting with different animations, expressions and interactions to bring his virtual avatar to life.

Overall, collaborating with Torro on this VTubing project was a truly cool experience. We are proud of what we achieved together and look forward to seeing the reaction from Torro's fans and followers when this exciting new project launches.

Using Unreal Engine, we created a virtual world that reflects Torro's personality and style, enabling him to interact with his audience in new and engaging ways.

Overall, our collaboration with Torro was a success, and we are proud of what we achieved together. The project showcased Torro's talent and creativity while simultaneously pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the world of VTubing. We were thrilled to be part of this exciting and rapidly growing community, and we are grateful for the opportunity to have worked with Torro on this project.
