The Quantum Learning Game of the Future
GALaQSci (Game-based and AI-assisted Learning about Quantum Science) is a public research and development project that aims to make second-generation quantum technologies tangible through an accessible smartphone game (Qookies). The goal of the project is to convey the fundamentals of quantum physics and key concepts of quantum technologies in an understandable and appealing way to young people, pupils, students, teachers, and the general public. To achieve this, the game combines playful learning with AI-supported NPC guidance that responds individually to the learners’ needs.

Qookies is based on an adaptive hybrid game concept that combines traditional game mechanics with modern educational approaches. The core of the game is a mobile puzzle adventure set in a quantum laboratory, where players solve different experiments, measurements, and logical challenges to gradually understand increasingly complex concepts of quantum physics.
The friendly NPC character Yuki answers questions, provides continuous guidance, and directs the learning path so that it is adapted to each player’s level of knowledge. This creates a personalized learning journey that is both motivating and accessible. This is made possible by the AI developed specifically for the game by Quantum Gaming, a Tübingen-based studio specializing in AI development.
A planned augmented reality (AR) extension will make it possible to experience quantum experiments in the real world. AR elements, QR codes, and 3D printing and paper templates for schools and museums are intended to support the understanding of abstract phenomena through tangible, physical replicas, allowing learning activities beyond the screen.
The project is being carried out through close collaboration between fundamental research, didactics, and game development. The scientific content comes from the quantum research community surrounding the partner institutions Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU), Technical University of Munich (TUM), Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics (MPQ), and the Excellence Cluster “Munich Center for Quantum Science and Technology” (MCQST), complemented by the Munich Quantum Valley (MQV). The game and AI development are supported by Quantum Gaming. These collaborations ensure a close integration of theoretical quantum research, educational design, and user-centered game development.
The Chair of Physics Education at LMU regularly conducts studies on the learning impact of the game, including investigations into the effects of narrative elements (story influence) and the use of eye-tracking to analyze players’ reading and usage behavior. The collected data and insights are intended to be published in open-access scientific journals, making the research publicly available. The goal is to achieve measurable learning outcomes, strengthen knowledge transfer in education and society, and foster broad public acceptance and understanding of quantum technologies.

Funding for the GALaQSci project is provided through the Quantum Aktiv program, supported by the Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR, formerly BMBF). This enables long-term, sustainable development as well as extensive evaluation measures throughout the entire project duration.
GALaQSci revolutionizes access to quantum technology through the unique combination of an AI-based NPC (non-player character) and hybrid gameplay integrating the app and AR features. It is the first game of its kind to reach a broad audience through a mobile app. GALaQSci aims to make quantum technologies accessible through the innovative, adaptive hybrid smartphone game Qookies and to seamlessly connect learning with AI support and augmented reality. The project brings together cutting-edge research, educational methodology, game development, and public outreach to engage audiences of all ages and to strengthen the quantum ecosystem in a sustainable way.
