Using game engines for architectural visualization
At Studio Merkas, we take pride in not only creating innovative ideas but also transforming forward-thinking technologies into tangible, real-world applications.
A prime example of this is our collaboration with Wüstenrot. The project became a fully walkable virtual reality experience even before the first groundbreaking took place.
The new Wüstenrot Campus in Kornwestheim is planned to accommodate up to 4,000 employees in the future. Before even a single component was built, decision-makers, architects, and designers were able to explore the entire site in virtual reality, developed by our team at Studio Merkas.
Using detailed BIM data, we recreated the entire campus in Unreal Engine. Buildings, pathways, interior spaces, and circulation routes were all virtually accessible and served as a central tool for architectural planning.
With the support of the architects and interior designers, we tested different spatial concepts in close collaboration, incorporated design proposals, and visualized optimization opportunities in real time — fully walkable, interactive, and intuitive.
What began as a VR prototype quickly evolved. From the central Unreal model, three standalone applications were developed:
The most advanced version, built with Unreal Engine on a powerful gaming PC, enabled high-resolution real-time rendering with freedom of movement and interaction.
For lighter hardware, we developed an adapted version with pre-rendered scenes, optimized for mobile VR use while maintaining clarity and understanding.
For presentations without a VR headset, we created another version. It is a lightweight iPad application that clearly and compactly presents key aspects of the campus project.
From the first idea to the final prototype, the project was shaped by close coordination with all stakeholders. Using VR as a planning tool enabled an entirely new level of decision-making quality and was personally presented to the Wüstenrot board members. The feedback? Entirely positive.
The project not only set new standards in visualization and user experience but also clearly demonstrated how immersive technologies can sustainably improve traditional planning processes.
We are proud to have realized the Wüstenrot Campus, a project that combines visionary ideas with tangible benefits and shows what becomes possible when technology and architecture work hand in hand.
The success of the Wüstenrot VR project demonstrates impressively that virtual reality is not a gimmick but a serious tool for planning complex construction projects. At Studio Merkas, we see this as just the beginning and look forward to transforming visionary architectural projects into immersive experiences in the future.
We worked with Nikola Merkas in the area of VR - parallel to the construction of the W&W Campus, our new company location, the campus was created as a VR model. This was used in various forms for internal communication and made a major contribution to the change process. The collaboration with the team around Mr. Merkas was constructive and pleasant, the quality of the work convinced us - and so did the result.
