Quantum Physics: Easy as Play!

Teaching the principles of quantum physics is no easy task. GALaQSci is the first step towards a future in which everyone has access to this complex field of knowledge.

An Overview of the Project

GALaQSci (Game-based and AI-assisted Learning about Quantum Science) is a public-facing research and development project that aims to make second-generation quantum technologies tangible through an accessible smartphone game (Qookies). The project's goal is to convey the fundamentals of quantum physics and key concepts in quantum technologies to young people, school students, university students, teachers and the general public in a comprehensible and engaging way. To achieve this, the game combines playful learning with an AI-assisted NPC companion that responds individually to each player's learning needs.

In terms of content, Qookies builds on an adaptive-hybrid game concept that combines traditional game mechanics with modern pedagogical approaches. At its core is a mobile puzzle adventure set in a quantum laboratory, where players solve various experiments, measurements and logical challenges to progressively understand increasingly complex concepts of quantum physics. The likeable NPC character Yuki answers questions, provides ongoing guidance and adapts the learning path to each player's current level of knowledge. This is made possible by the AI developed specifically for the game by Quantum Gaming, a Tübingen-based studio specialising in AI development. The result is a personalised learning journey that is both motivating and low-barrier.

A planned augmented reality extension will allow quantum experiments to be experienced in the real world. AR elements, QR codes, and 3D-print and paper templates for schools and museums are intended to support understanding of abstract phenomena through tangible, physical replicas — enabling learning activities beyond the screen.

The Project Partners

The project is realised through close collaboration between fundamental research, pedagogy and game development. Scientific content comes from the quantum community surrounding partner institutions Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU), Technical University of Munich (TUM), the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics (MPQ) and the Excellence Cluster "Munich Center for Quantum Science and Technology" (MCQST), complemented by Munich Quantum Valley (MQV). Game and AI development is supported by Quantum Gaming. These partnerships ensure a close interlinking of theoretical quantum research, didactic preparation and user-centred game design.

The Chair of Physics Education at LMU regularly conducts studies on the game's learning effectiveness, as well as investigations into the impact of narrative elements and the use of eye-tracking to analyse players' reading and usage behaviour. The data and insights gained are to be published in open-access journals, making the scientific discourse publicly accessible. The goal is to achieve measurable learning outcomes, strengthen knowledge transfer in society and education, and promote broad public acceptance and understanding of quantum technologies.

The GALaQSci project is funded through the Quantum Aktiv programme of the Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR, formerly BMBF). This enables long-term, sustainable development as well as comprehensive evaluation measures throughout the entire project duration. In addition, the funding provides the foundation for innovative research approaches and close collaboration between the various project partners — allowing the insights gained to be continuously developed and translated into practice.

The Game of the Future

GALaQSci revolutionises access to quantum technology through the unique combination of an AI-based NPC (Non-Player Character) and hybrid gameplay integrating the app with AR functionality. It is the first game of its kind to reach a broad user base through a mobile app. GALaQSci aims to make quantum technologies accessible through the innovative, adaptive-hybrid smartphone game Qookies — seamlessly connecting learning with AI assistance and augmented reality. The project brings together cutting-edge research, pedagogical methodology, playful development and public education to reach an audience of all ages and sustainably strengthen the quantum ecosystem.
